While improving English may be a key concern for international students or migrants, it is the connections and experiences unique to this country that leave the most profound impressions. As Maori culture and people are poorly represented within the ESOL sector, Te Maroro was established to provide a much needed presence and service in the industry offering educational programmes and services based on Māori traditions and values. Our mission is to proudly and accurately present our cultural heritage to international visitors. By sharing these taonga, we hope to better reflect and represent the unique bi-cultural heritage of Aotearoa while enhancing the learning experiences of students.

"Dynamic, interactive and a great learning experience for our students. All the students had a lot of fun while getting a hands on experience and extending their cultural knowledge and understanding. Very worthwhile!  (Margaret Jones, Programme Manager, ACG English School)

"A very worthwhile exercise which was energetic and fun and one in which valuable cultural concepts were passed on" (Peter Roselt, Tutor ACG English School)

"Students really enjoyed the cultural activities with Paiaka. A variety of students of different nationalities attended and the ones we were able to survey gave very positive feedback."  Steph Korocu, Academic Manager for Groups, ELA Auckland University)

"Paiaka was key in helping to create a week long programme of Maori cultural experiences for visiting international students including learning about Maori history, sociology and food. Students also learned to perform Poi dance and Haka. In his role Paiaka led a team of teachers guiding them in the curriculum and content creation. He also taught the more practical elements of the programme and was incredibly helpful in advising regarding selection of excursions and field trips." (Mark Kaneko, Programme Coordinator, PaCE Massey University)

"Paiaka is a brilliant teacher who appreciates practical learning. For example, I learnt a lot of vocabulary from him through his outdoor adventures, especially his surfing and wave-riding stories. Other characteristics of his which I admire include open-mindedness, patience, passion for teaching, understanding of others, openness to new/different ideologies, accommodation of diversity in class, and remembering his former students even after 7 years. With no hesitation, I'd recommend new students. (Hassam, KSA)

Nigel Paiaka Rawhiti is a brilliant English teacher who appreciates practical learning. For example, I learnt a lot of vocabulary from him through sharing his outdoor adventures, especially his surfing and wave-riding stories. Other characteristics of his which I admire include open-mindedness, patience, passion for teaching, understanding of others, openness to new/different ideologies, accommodation of diversity in class, and remembering his former students even after 7 years ;)

With no hesitation, I'd recommend new students, especially those learning general English, to take classes with Nigel.
